BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) — The Forest Service warns recreationists in the Sawtooth National Forest area about recent conditions.
"As a result of recent precipitation, Minidoka Ranger District and local law enforcement officers have increasingly responded to search and rescue calls for vehicles stuck on or sliding off of National Forest System (NFS) roads.
In some cases, recreationists were forced to spend the night in their vehicles until first responders were able to safely rescue them."
“Snowmobile travel is already occurring in some areas, and wheeled-vehicle use in the higher elevations is becoming more dangerous,” said Minidoka Recreation Program Manager Daniel Fischer. “We are even evaluating whether or not a seasonal closure may be necessary to prevent further safety issues and road damage.”
District staff warns that Monument Peak has already received more than a foot of snow on top of muddy road conditions from previous storms. They also advise visitors to avoid vehicle travel on Dry Creek Road (NFS Road 527) and on Oakley/Bostetter Road (NFS Road 500) west of North Water Spring.
Staff have also closed the gate on Howell Canyon Road (NFS Road 549). Access to campgrounds and summer homes in that area is now limited to foot traffic or over-snow vehicles.
Fee-free camping in the Rock Creek area will be available as snow levels allow. However, visitors should know that water at camping areas has been turned off and restroom facilities will not be maintained in the off-season.
