RICHMOND, Va. (TND) — A purchase at a thrift store brought more than $100,000 to a Virginia woman who enjoys watching shows about antiques.
The artwork that brought Jessica Vincent, a horse trainer, an early Christmas gift is known as a "Carlo Scarpa Pennellate" vase.
It's an "exceptionally rare to see" vase, according to Wright Auction House in Chicago.
Scarpa created a series of "Pennellate" pieces in 1942.
Fast forward to 81 years later, one of those pieces ended up inVincent's hands during her weekly trip to Goodwill, a thrift store.
Vincent told a curator at the auction house that the vase "caught her eye."
When she got a closer look at the rare find she noticed "Murano" on the base. Murano is an island in Venice known for its glasswork since the 13th century.
She told the curator she was "shocked to discover what she had found at Goodwill that day."
On December 13, the vase she purchased for $3.99 sold through the Wright Auction House for $107,100.
Vincent told The Associated Press, she enjoys thrifting and loves PBS’ "Antiques Roadshow."
A spokeswoman for Goodwill of Central and Coastal Virginia told the AP the vase was likely on the shelf for only a couple days given its quality and the quick rate at which products are sold.
"It could have been someone cleaning out grandma’s basement," Laura Faison said of the vase's backstory. “We'll probably never know.”
