Mailers to residents aren't scams

The Idaho Sheriff's Association says it wants to clear up any potential confusion about some mailers that have been mailed to residents across the Gem State.

It's not a scam, it says.

"If you have received such a mailer, we want you to know that it is a legitimate request and (donations) are completely voluntary," the association said on Monday.

The Association says "this most trusted organization has supported the office of sheriff in many ways for over 55 years." The Association says it has sent a direct-mail solicitation to residents for more than a decade.

But not everyone seems to be a fan -- including Kootenai County SheriffRobert Norris.

"Recently, Sheriff Robert Norris was made aware The Idaho Sheriff’s Association was mailing thousands of letters to constituents in Kootenai County," Norris said on social media. "This letter was using the Sheriff’s name and position as a mechanism to seek donations for the Association. This mailer was not approved by Sheriff Norris and the Association has since been instructed to cease mailing them."

The Association, in response, said it had an authorization form from the sheriff dated in January, but said it will remove his name from future mailings.
